A PR campaign conveyed a determined effort to find manganese nodules. These potato-sized rocks lie scattered in the abyss, the great plains of the deep ocean. Beaked whales can dive 2,000 metres below the ocean’s surface. Why and how do they do it? Ocean currents greatly affect Earth’s climate by transferring heat from the tropics to the polar regions. Transferring warm or cold air and precipitation to coastal regions, winds may carry them inland. Surface heat and freshwater fluxes create global density gradients that drive the thermohaline circulation part of large-scale ocean circulation. It plays an important role in supplying heat to the polar regions, and thus in sea ice regulation. Changes in the thermohaline circulation are thought to have significant impacts on Earth’s energy budget. In so far as the thermohaline circulation governs the rate at which deep waters reach the surface, it may also significantly influence atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Saline water covers approximately 360,000,000 km2 (140,000,000 sq mi) and is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas, with the ocean covering approximately 71% of Earth’s surface and 90% of the Earth’s biosphere.[6] The ocean contains 97% of Earth’s water, and oceanographers have stated that less than 5% of the World Ocean has been explored.[6] The total volume is approximately 1.35 billion cubic kilometers (320 million cu mi) with an average depth of nearly 3,700 meters (12,100 ft).[7][8][9] But even more alarming was the suspicion of the Russians. To convince them that Howard Hughes was genuinely interested in nodules, executives were despatched to conferences on ocean mining where they described in detail their plans to harvest the rocks. Our living planet is only as healthy as its oceans. These vast bodies of water cover more than two-thirds of Earth’s surface and are home to some of our most spectacular and treasured life. Oceans regulate our climate, produce half the oxygen we breathe, fuel the water cycle that produces rain and freshwater, sustain the livelihoods of millions, and provide nourishment for nearly 3 billion people. The amount of noise in the ocean has doubled each decade since the 1950s. Professor Richard Twitchett explains what a more acidic ocean could mean for the future of marine life. The deep ocean houses an ecosystem that has learned to thrive without sunlight or warmth. Welcome to the abyss. The Foresight reports are written by experts to brief ministers on medium and long-term issues of significance. This one has been signed off by ministers from four different departments as the authors emphasise the need for a joined-up oceans policy. The XPRIZE Ocean Initiative is dedicated to ensuring our ocean is healthy, valued and understood. In the center of the Pacific Ocean gyre our researchers found more plastic than plankton. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us. The geologist Bram Murton has warned of “an ill-informed knee-jerk reaction” to ocean mining which, he says, offers the potential to support a low-carbon future. Lanternfish are one of many animals that light up the ocean with their glowing bodies. It’s time to give our ocean our full attention. A global collective bringing the ocean and its importance to the most connected generation in history. Supported by UNOPS. Another of the authors, the chief scientist for the UK government’s environment department Ian Boyd, agreed: “The ocean is out of sight, out of mind,” he said. Beaked whales can dive 2,000 metres below the ocean’s surface. Why and how do they do it? As the world ocean is the principal component of Earth’s hydrosphere, it is integral to life, forms part of the carbon cycle, and influences climate and weather patterns. The world ocean is the habitat of 230,000 known species, but because much of it is unexplored, the number of species that exist in the ocean is much larger, possibly over two million.[10] The origin of Earth’s oceans is unknown; oceans are thought to have formed in the Hadean eon and may have been the impetus for the emergence of life. The rariphotic is a sort of “missing link” between medium-light reef zones and the lightless ocean beneath, known as the aphotic zone. Scientists surveying an ocean area targeted for deep-sea mining have shown how much is left to discover about the biodiversity of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, a five-million-square-kilometre region in the central Pacific Ocean. Although no-one has yet started mining the ocean floor, dozens of research expeditions are under way “at an intense pace”, says Michael Lodge, from the International Seabed Authority. As the world’s population grows, so does the need for food, new energy resources, new blue technologies & jobs while keeping our oceans clean. How can Blue Technology contribute? The partnership spans fisheries, aquaculture, oil and gas, marine bio products, transportation, defence, marine renewables, and ocean technology. Companies are collaborating to define a shared innovation roadmap based on common challenges and requirements. This acceleration of the current takes place in the direction of waves and dominant wind. Accordingly, when the sea depth increases, the rotation of the earth changes the direction of currents, in proportion with the increase of depth while friction lowers their speed. At a certain sea depth, the current changes direction and is seen inverted in the opposite direction with speed current becoming nul: known as the Ekman spiral. The influence of these currents is mainly experienced at the mixed layer of the ocean surface, often from 400 to 800 meters of maximum depth. These currents can considerably alter, change and are dependent on the various yearly seasons. If the mixed layer is less thick (10 to 20 meters), the quasi permanent current at the surface adopts an extreme oblique direction in relation to the direction of the wind, becoming virtually homogeneous, until the Thermocline.[38] Life in the Jurassic ocean Czy wieloryb naprawdę jest taki duży? Problem one: communication. Underwater vehicles are typically tethered to a boat because radio waves don’t do well in water. What SoFi’s inventors have opted for instead is sound.
